Immediately following the announcement that author/journalist Abdi Fite departed from the Oromia Media Network (OMN) last week, supporters of the journalist set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds towards Fite’s “severance package.” The campaign sought to raise $25,000; however, it seems the campaign lost its steam by the end of the week; three days later, it could only manage to raise about 48% of the target. Some have been heard complaining on social media about Fite’s supporters not putting their money where their mouths are.
Meanwhile, reports on social media say the known Oromo historian Prof. Mohammed Hassen has resigned from the OMN Board of Trustees as of April 30, 2017. Gadaa.com/Finfinne Tribune was not able to independently verify this report circulating on social media, particularly on Facebook.
No statement has been given from OMN regarding these recent high-profile departures from the organization.
