Last week, BBC’s Afaan Oromoo and Amharic services reported about Abdissa Borena’s return to Bishoftu, ahead of the 2017 Irreecha holiday. Abdissa’s pregnant wife Sifan Legesse was among those who lost their lives during #Irreecha2016. Earlier that year, Sifan’s brother Gemechis was also killed during a peaceful protest in the region of Oromia in Ethiopia.
On Sunday, October 1, 2017, wearing a T-shirt bearing Sifan’s photo in Aadaa (Oromo cultural) cloth, Abdissa returned to Lake Arsadi’s Irreecha to pay tribute to his departed wife, and also to honor her by upholding the Oromo culture and heritage.
To this date, those responsible for authorizing the use of teargases and live ammunition inside the crowded civilian zone of millions at Bishoftu’s Irreecha celebration in 2016, thereby causing the deadly stampede and the carnage, have not been brought to justice.
